The 2026 World Malaria Map is here!

The 2026 World Malaria Map is here.

Every year, the Swiss Expert Committee for Travel Medicine publishes a world map on HealthyTravel.ch showing the different malaria risk zones. At Travel Clinic UZH, we also use this map to inform our clients about their individual malaria risk during a trip as part of their pre-travel medical consultation.

What is malaria?

Malaria is a severe febrile illness caused by plasmodia, a type of parasite. There are several types of malaria, with malaria tropica being the most serious. Malaria is transmitted by nocturnal Anopheles mosquitoes (meaning risk for transmission is highest at dawn, dusk and nighttime).

Initial symptoms include fever, aching limbs, nausea and a feeling of weakness, but serious complications such as seizures, shock and coma can occur as the disease progresses. If malaria is left untreated, up to 20% of cases can be fatal. However, if treatment is provided in time, this number improves to a fatality rate of only 1%.

How are malaria transmission areas changing?

The distribution of malaria is subject to constant change. One reason for this is climate change: rising temperatures and changing climatic conditions can favor the living conditions of mosquitoes. This can not only lead to an increase in transmission, but also to changes in the geographic risk areas.

When is a pre-travel medical consultation worthwhile?

When traveling, there are many health risks to consider in addition to malaria. Different mosquito species can transmit different pathogens, and their areas of distribution do not always overlap with malaria risk areas. Depending on the destination, length of stay, type of travel, and planned activities, topics such as rabies, traveler’s diarrhea, altitude sickness, sexually transmitted infections, or necessary vaccinations may also be relevant.

Travel medicine is a highly dynamic field. Recommendations may change, new outbreaks may occur, and known risks may shift regionally. This is why, during a pre-travel medical consultation, your individual itinerary is discussed together with a specialist. Your personal health situation, vaccination status, and planned activities are also taken into account.

At our clinic, you will receive a consultation tailored to your trip, including recommendations on mosquito protection, malaria prophylaxis, and other preventive measures.
