Researchers for Global Health (R4GH)
What is R4GH?
Researchers for Global Health (R4GH) is a non-profit association with the aim of strengthening research, teaching and patient care in global health. R4GH was founded in 2015 out of a medical research collaboration between the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
Prof. Dr. Jan Fehr, Head of the University of Zurich Travel Clinic and Head of the Department of Public and Global Health at the University of Zurich, is a co-initiator of R4GH.
In addition to health projects that directly benefit patients, R4GH also supports young researchers who lack the funding to address important local health questions. This approach has a two-fold impact: even small contributions can enable meaningful research, while at the same time supporting the next generation of researchers and health professionals to address global health challenges in the future. Furthermore, R4GH promotes ongoing dialogue between the Global South and the Global North by organising workshops, trainings, conferences and exchange visits. Especially in light of current global developments, we have seen how increasingly important this continuous exchange is.
Why the ZRM supports R4GH
Global health affects all of us. Infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and gaps in health care do not stop at borders. By supporting R4GH, the University of Zurich Travel Clinic takes responsibility beyond travel consultations.
In short:
- We support partnership-based research that benefits patients.
- We strengthen education and exchange so that knowledge has a lasting impact.
- We support structures that translate scientific findings into practice.

R4GH Small Grant 2025: Research on flooding and diabetes care in Uganda
In 2025, R4GH supported a project by Karen Helmy Ademun (Makerere University) that examines how flooding affects access to diabetes treatment in the Kasese District. The study investigates structural and systemic disruptions in care and provides approaches to make health systems more resilient to climate-related events.
