Love on the Move: A Safer Sex Guide for Travel Adventures

Happy Valentine's Day! Today is all about love, closeness, and perhaps a little spontaneity. Whether you're planning a city break, beach vacation, or solo adventure, it's worth taking a moment to think about protection and prevention to ensure your trip is unforgettable and safe.

Travel broadens horizons, connects people, and creates new encounters. Spontaneous intimacy can also arise. Sexual encounters are part of this, and safer sex concerns everyone – regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or relationship status.

Valentine's Day in particular can bring romantic, surprising moments. Being well prepared does not detract from the fun—on the contrary! Those who are prepared can enjoy themselves more relaxed.
With this packing list, you'll be well equipped for any travel adventure.

Condoms: A Travel Essential You Should Always Pack

When used correctly, condoms are one of the most reliable means of protection against many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV. They also protect against unwanted pregnancy. Condoms are available in different varieties and are readily available both in Switzerland and in many travel destinations. It is important to make sure you buy the right size.
Be sure to pack enough good-quality condoms. Even though condoms are readily available in many places, finding them in a foreign city can be difficult. Store condoms away from sunlight, for example in your toiletries bag. They should not be kept in your wallet – heat and friction can damage the material and increase the risk of tearing.

Lubricant: A Small Item That Makes a Big Difference

Lubricants improve sensation, reduce friction, and thus lower the risk of minor injuries that can promote infections. Especially when traveling or during long nights, a small bottle can go a long way. Make sure you choose sizes that are suitable for hand luggage and compatible with condoms. Latex condoms, for example, should only be used with water-soluble or silicone-based lubricants, as otherwise they may tear.

PrEP: Protection Starts Before Your Adventure

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication that can be used to protect against HIV infection. It is taken regularly and, when used correctly, is very effective in reducing the risk of HIV transmission.

Important for Travelers

  • Take enough tablets with you to last the entire trip.

Note: In certain countries, however, carrying HIV medication with you can be a sensitive issue. Discuss this with a medical professional in good time.

  • Have a medical check-up and all necessary tests before you leave.

  • PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections. Condoms therefore remain important!

PEP: The Emergency Plan You Hopefully Will Never Need

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is an emergency treatment that can be taken after unprotected sex with a person whose HIV status is unknown or who is not receiving effective treatment in order to reduce the risk of infection. It should
be started within 6 hours if possible, but no later than 48 hours after exposure, and is available in hospital emergency rooms or specialized HIV clinics.

Love Smart, Travel Well!

Valentine's Day is a good occasion to think about love, intimacy, and health – whether you're traveling or at home. Being prepared allows you to make more informed decisions and enjoy intimacy in a more relaxed way. This includes having open conversations about protection, boundaries, and desires, as well as packing the right accessories.

Enjoy your trip and take care of yourself.
